Minature Monet -Field of Poppies

SOLD
Minature Monet-Field of Poppies, 6"x6"

Ok, you knew it had to happen, a copy or rather an interpretation of Monet's famous painting of a poppy field. This was waaaaay fun to paint. Very refreshing changing the shape to a square and working in minature, it really gave me a chance to interpret this scene rather than just copy it. I reaped all the benefits of painting from a masterwork as well as the freedom to be creative. Monet has several other paintings that feature fields of poppies look for interpretations of those in the days a head, as well as some more of my original poppy paintings based on photos of Monet's home at Giverny a friend generously shared with me.

One Perfect Pansy SOLD

One Perfect Pansy, 6"x6", oil
SOLD

Pansies! Ya' gotta love'em with their smiling, cheerful "faces". As much as I love daffodils, trumpeting the arrival of spring I have to say that pansies rival them for a place in my gardeners heart. I think it's because pansies are the first flower I actually plant in the the garden and in pots around the yard. The daffys arrive as if by magic, pushing through the warming earth and last year's leaf litter all on their own. But pansies must be carefull selected at the nursery for the best colors and the happiest, friendliest grin. Then the fun really begins, getting my hands dirty filling up urns and plannters and digging in the flower borders. Suddenly, the garden is transformed from a sleeply brown blanket to a crazy quilt of patchwork colors, and it's all thanks to the little pansy.

Sunflower Farm

Sunflower Farm, 9x12, oil
$300, unframed, Shipping is Free in the US
To Purchase contact: jan.blencowe@comcast.net

I did this painting in late August or early September at a nearby community garden where sunflowers are a popular "crop". It wasn't a bad painting but something about it just didn't sit right with me. After I got home I realized that it was the temperature of the light. It was hot and hazy in the late afternoon, but I didn't quite capture that feel to my satisfaction. As I reflected on the painting I realized that while I had focused on the hazy feel the light in the painting had gone cool. I sat and mused as to why. Then I figured it out. The haze is caused by water vapor in the air, which reflects the sky, which of course is blue, a cool color. So I knew that what I should do was let the painting dry and then scumble a thin veil of warm light over the trees and grass. The sunflowers already being warm yellows and oranges were picking up the sunlight and shining like burnished gold. Well I set the painting aside and got busy with other things. Then I had to pack up the studio because we were remodeling it and the painting got put in a box. Today I was sorting through boxes I came across this painting and remembered what I had planned to do. So onto the easel it went for finishing touches. Enjoy!

Poppies Near the House

Poppies Near the House, 6x8, oil
SOLD

It's poppy mania LOL!!! I've enjoyed painting these tremendously, I think it's the bold, saturated, intense color of the poppies and how the sunlight makes them glow orange. I have two pots of fragrant white tulips tinged with a bit of green and I think they will occupy me for the next few days...but somehow I think the poppies will reappear in the not too distant future. It's always exciting when something grabs you and a series of paintings along a theme is born. After some winter blah's and a bit of painter's block it's good to feel enthusiastic again!
