Yesterday's post piqued the interest of some of you and I received requests to show and explain more of my Landscape Echoes Series of semi-abstract landscape paintings.Above is the very first one in the series.

This is Landscape Echoes no.6 If you know the rest of my more traditional tonalist and impressionist paintings I think you can see the resemblance in color palette. In fact I use the exact same colors in these as I do in the other paintings.

This one is Landscape Echoes no. 9 aka Winter Bay. I start these paintings the same way as my more traditional works with a brush and transparent red oxide to lay in an underpainting of large shapes.

This one is Landscape Echoes no. 15 The biggest difference is when I go to color, I paint using only a palette knife to create thick, delicious color passages and textures. I know some of you will prefer my regular landscapes but for some of you this is just your cup of tea!

Personally, I find that working more abstractly has so many benefits: focusing on large areas of color masses, loosening up, exploring texture and it's role in an image, a focus on design, and it's also a way to elevate  expression something that may be reigned in a little more in developed paintings.

Whenever I am dissatisfied with my work, fell uninspired, boxed in and dull with what I'm painting I know it's time to broaden my repetoir with some abstract works.
